Yesterday morning my phone rings and I notice that my mother is calling me. I answer, and she has that voice.. you know.. the voice of WHY ME and Help all with just giving a quick sigh and softly saying my name. Of course I didn’t know at that moment she was referring to her furnace but I was relieved to find out that it was only her heater this time.
She gave me the quick run down. She turned on her heat, she could hear the motors start to turn on, but only cold air coming out. She then told me that the furnace never fired with any flames. After a quick diagnosis we found that her hot surface ignitor needed to be replaced.

So what can you check?
If you are like my mother and have a gas furnace you may want to read this post which goes through a series of checks to help you diagnose your furnace problem and should give you some great guidance.
For those of you that do NOT have gas service to your home and rely on a heat pump or an air handler to provide your home heat than this should help you out.
Heat pump systems heat your home very similar to how your air conditioning system cools your home in the summer time only reversed. A heat pump not only has the ability to cool your home in the summer but also provide warm air through the vents and into your home during the winter.
Check#1 – Always check your air flow starting with the air filter. If your filter is dirty then replace it. This may be the only problem that you have. Restricting the air flow into your air handler (part inside the house) can put a strain on the outdoor heat pump and can cause it to exceed it’s normal operating pressures causing the unit to shut off or lock out. If your filter is clean and does not need to be changed then there could also be another air flow restriction elsewhere. Many times homeowners will close all the vents in the entire home except one to help keep that one room more comfortable. This is just like having a dirty filter also. Try to avoid completely closing off vents to ensure there is proper air distribution throughout the duct system of the home.
Check #2 – If your home is all electric and you know you only have an air conditioner outside and not a heat pump then you will also want to make sure you have adequate air flow as well. If the air flow is okay and your air handler is still not heating your home than due to the dangerous voltages that are used I would strongly recommend having one of our professionals take a look and find out why your air handler is not providing you heat.
Check #3 – For Heat Pump owners. You should have a second heating option labeled on your thermostat. Attempt to place your heat to Aux Heat (or sometimes called Emergency Heat). If your system still does not provide any warm air to your home than please call for a professional diagnosis. If the system does start to provide warm heat than you may have a problem with your outdoor heat pump. Do not ignore the problems that a heat pump could be having by only using the emergency heat setting on your thermostat. This is only a temporary fix and is typically the most expensive way to heat your home and is why many contractors recommend using a heat pump instead of an air conditioner on all electric homes.
In a nutshell, if you are having a problem with your heat in an all electric house other than a filter it will be best to have a professional look at your system. The repairs can vary greatly along with the time to find a proper diagnosis.
